A significant meeting between the US State Department delegation and officials from five Central Asian countries took place in Astana to discuss matters concerning Afghanistan.

Thomas West, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, tweeted about the meeting, mentioning the presence of Rina Amiri, the US special envoy for human rights in Afghanistan.

“Met with colleagues from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan for the #C5PlusUS session on Afghanistan in Astana to discuss our joint support of the Afghan people,” he stated.

During the session, the discussions primarily focused on the “joint support of the Afghan people,” as conveyed in Thomas West’s tweet.

Prior to this, the US State Department had announced that Thomas West and Rina Amiri, the Special Representative for Afghanistan and the Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights, respectively, would be traveling to Astana, Kazakhstan, and Doha from July 26 to July 31.

While in Astana, they would meet with their counterparts from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan for a C5+1 Special Session on Afghanistan.

In addition to the official meetings, the US special envoys would also engage with civil society members to discuss ways of advancing women’s economic empowerment in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan.

In Doha, the delegation led by Thomas West would also hold discussions with representatives from the caretaker government and technocratic professionals from key Afghan ministries to address critical interests in Afghanistan.
