The Balochistan government has decided to intensify its efforts to preserve forests and maintain tree cover across the province. Members of civil society emphasized the critical need for swift and practical actions by the provincial authorities to safeguard rare species and uphold environmental sustainability. Aziz Ullah, an environmentalist, highlighted the detrimental impact of illegal logging of ancient trees on Balochistan’s ecosystem. He called for urgent measures to halt this destructive practice.
During the harsh winter months in Balochistan, locals resort to cutting down ancient trees such as Juniper, Palos, and Olive. They cut them down for firewood. This led to further endangering of rare plant species. Aziz emphasized the lack of alternative fuel sources that makes residents continue to cut trees for cooking and heating purposes. They have truckloads of wood being transported for sale across the province. Additionally, Aziz noted that the forest department has allowed tree cutting by collecting forest taxes, exacerbating the ecological damage.
Forest department officials acknowledged the absence of alternative resources for locals to address this pressing issue. They assured that they would take measures to curb rampant tree cutting and restore the province’s ecosystem. However, the challenge remains significant. The forests in Ziarat, once the world’s second-largest juniper forest, now face threats to their sustainability.
The dwindling forest cover in Balochistan poses serious and severe environmental risks. It also impacts the livelihoods of local communities that are dependent on forest resources. Concerted efforts are the need of the hour to address this pressing issue and ensure the long-term sustainability of forests.
In response to these concerns, the Balochistan government must prioritize the preservation of forests, implement effective measures to combat illegal logging and promote sustainable forestry practices. This may include stricter enforcement of forest protection laws, community engagement initiatives, and investment in alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on firewood.
Furthermore, raising awareness among the local population about the importance of preserving forests and the adverse effects of deforestation is essential. Educational campaigns, workshops, and outreach programs can help instill a sense of environmental responsibility. It can encourage community participation in forest conservation efforts.
By taking proactive steps to preserve its forests, Balochistan can protect its rich biodiversity, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and promote sustainable development for future generations.
