A major security incident has been reported in northern Afghanistan after fighters belonging to the National Resistance Front (NRF) killed a senior Taliban official in the Badakhshan province. According to reports emerging from the region, Mawlawi Mirajuddin, the Taliban-appointed police chief of Badakhshan, was killed on Saturday morning during a targeted armed attack while he was traveling toward the province of Takhar. The attack highlights the intensifying insurgent activity in northern Afghanistan and the continued challenges faced by the Taliban administration in maintaining security in the region.
According to information provided by an NRF spokesperson, the incident occurred when Mirajuddin’s vehicle came under sudden gunfire from armed assailants believed to be fighters linked to the resistance movement. The attackers reportedly ambushed the convoy and opened fire at close range. As a result of the attack, the vehicle overturned, leading to the immediate death of Mawlawi Mirajuddin at the scene. One of his bodyguards sustained serious injuries during the incident. The attackers managed to flee the area shortly after carrying out the assault, leaving local authorities scrambling to respond.
The NRF quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as part of their ongoing resistance campaign against the Taliban administration. The group stated that operations targeting Taliban officials and security infrastructure would continue as part of their broader strategy to challenge Taliban control across Afghanistan. Mawlawi Mirajuddin was considered an important figure within the Taliban’s administrative and security structure, particularly in northern Afghanistan where security dynamics remain complex and volatile.
As the police chief of Badakhshan Province, Mirajuddin was reportedly involved in strengthening the Taliban’s security network in the region and coordinating operations aimed at controlling insurgent activities. His death is therefore seen by observers as a significant setback for the Taliban administration, especially in a region that has witnessed increasing resistance activity in recent months.
The attack also reflects the growing operational reach of the NRF in northern Afghanistan. Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, the resistance movement led by Ahmad Massoud has gradually expanded its activities in several provinces. Areas such as Panjshir Valley, Baghlan Province, and Takhar have seen increasing guerrilla-style attacks against Taliban officials and checkpoints. These operations often involve ambushes, targeted assassinations, and hit-and-run attacks designed to weaken Taliban authority in strategic areas.
