Pakistan and Afghanistan Focus on Strengthening Deep-Rooted Ties

In a continuation of high-level diplomatic engagement, Afghan Chargé d’affaires Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb met Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar  to discuss strengthening the Pakistan Afghanistan bilateral relations

The meeting, highlighted in a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO), underscored the “deep-rooted ties” between the two nations. Both sides agreed to work towards strengthening mutually beneficial relations, marking a significant step in rebuilding trust.

    • Counterterrorism Efforts: Counterterrorism was a focal point, as both countries address concerns over the use of Afghan soil by terrorist groups targeting Pakistan. Reports suggest the Taliban may be relocating TTP fighters from border areas to Ghazni as part of these efforts.
    • Trade and Connectivity: Shakeeb raised issues related to trade, regional connectivity, and challenges faced by Afghan businessmen, emphasizing the importance of economic cooperation.
    • Humanitarian Concerns: Discussions also touched on the status of Afghan refugees and students in Pakistan, reflecting the shared responsibility to address humanitarian issues.

This meeting follows a recent interaction between Pakistan’s Chargé d’affaires in Kabul, Obaid Nizamani, and Taliban Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob, signaling a commitment from both sides to mend strained ties.

Special Representative for Afghanistan Amb Mohammad Sadiq also participated in the meeting, later holding a separate discussion with Shakeeb. These talks highlight renewed efforts to address longstanding challenges, including security concerns and regional cooperation, while paving the way for improved bilateral relations.

The Afghan embassy in Pakistan expressed optimism, noting the constructive dialogue on trade, connectivity, and shared regional interests.
