Pakistan and Russia Strengthen Trade and Economic Cooperation

In a significant step to enhance bilateral relations, Pakistan and Russia signed eight Trade agreements during the 9th Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) meeting held in Moscow. These agreements aim to bolster collaboration in trade, industry, and education, marking another milestone in the evolving partnership between the two nations.

Federal Minister for Energy Owais Ahmed Leghari led the Pakistani delegation, emphasizing the importance of these accords. “Pakistan-Russia cooperation is progressing steadily, and these agreements will further deepen our collaboration in various sectors,” said Leghari at the signing ceremony.

    Key Agreements Reached:

    • Industrial Collaboration: Agreements include initiatives to enhance industrial capacity and explore new avenues of production.
    • Insulin Production: Both nations agreed to collaborate on local production of insulin, promoting healthcare advancements.
    • Educational Exchange: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Pakistan’s New Tech and a Russian university to foster academic and technological collaboration.

No Agreement on Crude Oil Trade

Contrary to reports, Federal Minister for Petroleum Dr. Musadik Masood Malik clarified that no deal had been finalized for the import of Russian crude oil. Addressing the media in Islamabad, he stated, “The news about crude oil agreements with Russia is baseless. No conclusion has been reached on this matter.”

Dr. Malik also discussed Pakistan’s LNG surplus due to reduced demand from private-sector power plants. “We have postponed five LNG cargoes and are considering delaying five more, given the decreased costs and supply,” he said. Additionally, he reiterated Pakistan’s willingness to pursue the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, contingent upon the relaxation of international sanctions on Iran.

The newly signed agreements reflect the growing economic and diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Russia, paving the way for enhanced trade, industrial growth, and educational opportunities. As both nations strengthen their cooperation, these developments signify a commitment to sustainable economic partnerships.
