PM Shehbaz Seeks Global Pressure on Kabul Amid Emerging Terr0r Threat
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the international community to intensify pressure on the Afghan Taliban-led administration in Kabul to prevent the rise of what he described as a new terr0r threat emanating from Afghanistan. His remarks came during a high-level forum in Turkmenistan marking the International Year of Peace and Trust 2025, the International Day of Neutrality, and the 30th Anniversary of Permanent Neutrality.
Speaking at the event, the prime minister reiterated that the peaceful resolution of conflicts remains a central pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy. His appeal follows months of heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, driven by continued cross-border att@cks and recent clashes along the frontier. Islamabad maintains that several incidents inside Pakistan have been carried out by Afghan nationals, a claim Kabul disputes.
Pakistan Stresses Need for Regional Stability
PM Shehbaz noted that bilateral relations suffered a major blow after week-long border clashes in October, following what Pakistan described as an unprovoked att@ck on its border posts. Although a ceasefire is currently in place, both sides have yet to agree on effective mechanisms to prevent future violations.
Beyond regional tensions, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s endorsement of the Gaza peace initiative supported by the United Nations Security Council. He underscored the urgency of protecting civilian lives, enabling the flow of humanitarian assistance and securing a lasting ceasefire to safeguard the Palestinian population. The premier also emphasized Pakistan’s sustained advocacy for the inalienable rights of the Kashmiri people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Development and Climate Challenges Take Center Stage
PM Shehbaz highlighted that socio-economic development remains his government’s foremost priority. He pointed to recent strides in financial inclusion, support for women and marginalized groups and expansion of economic participation across sectors. Pakistan, he said, is committed to pursuing sustainable development despite the significant challenges posed by climate-induced disasters.
Calling climate change, inequality and poverty major transnational threats, he stressed the need for unified global responses rooted in shared responsibility. The premier urged nations to ensure equitable access to digital and advanced technologies, describing them as key drivers of modern development.
Connectivity and Cooperation for a Shared Future
The prime minister also called for greater investment in regional connectivity projects, framing them as essential pathways for transporting goods and fostering the exchange of ideas, innovation and growth. He argued that deeper cooperation is crucial for building a common future centered on peace, stability and shared prosperity.
PM’s Two-Day Visit to Turkmenistan
During his two-day official visit to Ashgabat, PM Shehbaz joined several world leaders, including the presidents of Turkmenistan, Russia, Türkiye, Iran, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, at the Neutrality Monument to commemorate the International Day of Neutrality. He also met Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to discuss opportunities to enhance trade, transport and energy cooperation, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari and Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, PM Shehbaz is scheduled to attend multiple international engagements, engaging with global policymakers, diplomats and leaders on critical regional and international issues.
