Revitalizing Pakistan Railways: A Journey Towards Modernization

The British colonial era left a lasting mark on the subcontinent, particularly with the development of an extensive railway system. Stretching from Landi Kotal to Ras Kumari, it revolutionized travel, making it affordable and accessible. In 1947, Pakistan inherited over 8,000 kilometers of this network. However, the system has since contracted significantly. Today, Pakistan Railways is focused on modernization, implementing measures to restore and enhance its services.

At the core of these efforts is infrastructure improvement. Several projects are underway to upgrade tracks, bridges, and signaling systems. The Mainline-One (ML1) project is key to this transformation. It forms part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The project aims to double track capacity and increase train speeds to 160 km/h, reducing travel time between major cities.

Pakistan Railways is also embracing technology. The new online ticketing system has made booking easier for passengers. They can now reserve seats and check schedules from home. This system also offers real-time updates on delays and cancellations.

Freight services are improving too. Pakistan Railways is modernizing logistics to better serve industries like textiles and agriculture. Dedicated freight trains are reducing road traffic and lowering carbon emissions. This focus on freight is crucial as it has always been a major source of revenue for the railways.

International partnerships are growing as well. Collaborations with China, Turkey, and Iran are boosting regional connectivity. The revival of the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul freight train is a significant achievement. It enhances trade across the region.

Pakistan Railways is also working to make stations more secure and eco-friendly. Solar panels are being installed to cut energy costs and promote renewable energy.

Financially, the future looks promising. Last year, Pakistan Railways earned eighty-eight billion rupees. This year, the target is set at one trillion nine billion rupees. With these modernization efforts, Pakistan Railways aims to reclaim its past glory and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
