Three Martyred During Snow Clearance Operation in Gilgit-Baltistan

A Pakistan Army captain, along with a soldier and a civilian machine operator, was martyred during a snow clearance operation in Gilgit-Baltistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Saturday.

The operation aimed to facilitate the movement of forces by reopening the strategically important Burzil Pass amid harsh winter conditions.

Operation Conducted to Open Burzil Pass

According to ISPR, the snow clearance operation took place during the night between January 2 and January 3, 2026. The army used heavy machinery to clear accumulated snow and restore access through Burzil Pass.

Notably, the route holds operational importance as it supports the movement of troops and logistics in the region.

    Operation Led by Captain Asmad

The military’s media wing stated that Captain Asmad, aged 28, led the operation. Despite extreme weather conditions, the team continued clearance efforts to ensure operational readiness.

Meanwhile, army personnel worked alongside a civilian machine operator from the Public Works Department (PWD), highlighting civil-military coordination in difficult terrain.

    Snow Slide Triggers Tragic Incident

ISPR said that around 2:00am on January 3, a sudden snow slide struck the area while the operation was underway. As a result, Captain Asmad, Sepoy Rizwan (32), and civilian machine operator Essa became trapped under the snow.

Rescue teams immediately launched intensive efforts to retrieve the trapped individuals.

    Rescue Efforts and Martyrdom

After prolonged and determined rescue efforts, all trapped individuals were recovered from the snow. However, the condition of Captain Asmad, Sepoy Rizwan, and Essa deteriorated due to severe exposure.

Consequently, all three embraced martyrdom despite medical assistance.

    ISPR Pays Tribute to Sacrifice

In its statement, ISPR said the martyred individuals rendered the ultimate sacrifice while leading a challenging operation under extreme weather conditions.

“These individuals laid down their lives while facilitating operational movement of forces,” the statement said, emphasizing their dedication and professionalism.

    Commitment to Defend the Motherland

Moreover, ISPR stated that the sacrifice of the martyrs reflects the unwavering commitment of the Pakistan Armed Forces to defend the country.

Their devotion to duty, even in life-threatening conditions, demonstrates that all ranks of the armed forces remain prepared to make sacrifices in service of the nation.
