White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan has reaffirmed the Biden administration’s efforts to ensure that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) does not allow Afghanistan to become a base for terrorist attacks.

Sullivan made the remarks on Sunday in response to reporters’ questions about Biden’s statements that indicated the US is cooperating with the IEA to target terrorists in Afghanistan.

Sullivan said that the US is holding the IEA accountable for their promises under the Doha agreement, which stipulates that Afghanistan cannot be used as a launching pad for terrorist plots against anyone, especially the US, its allies and partners.

Sullivan said that the administration is working hard every day to make sure that the IEA fulfills those promises. He did not elaborate further on the matter.

Biden had previously told reporters: “Do you remember what I said about Afghanistan? I said al Qaeda would not be there. I said it wouldn’t be there. I said we’d get help from the Taliban. What’s happening now? What’s going on? Read your press. I was right.”

The IEA said that Biden’s comments were “recognition of reality.”

The IEA has also asserted that its policy of not permitting anyone to use Afghanistan’s territory against others is its own policy.
