Gulzar Imam Shambay has marked one year of collaboration with the Pakistani state. This is a significant change in his stance. Gulzar Imam Shambay, who once masterminded militant operations in South Balochistan, was arrested in 2023. The arrest was the result of a highly sensitive intelligence operation.
Born in 1978 in Panjgur district, Shambay was initially a contractor and local newspaper reporter. In 2009, he joined the terrorist group. Gulzar Imam Shambay even traveled to India on fake documents in 2017. There, he received training and funding for terrorism in Balochistan.
Shambay served as the deputy of Brahamdagh Bugti in the Baloch Republican Army (BRA) until 2018. He then became the operational head of the Baloch Republican Army (BRAS). Later, he founded the Baloch National Army (BNA), which was responsible for various terrorist acts in the province.
After his arrest, Gulzar Imam Shambay showed remorse for his 15-year involvement in terrorism. He admitted his actions were misguided. His arrest and subsequent change of heart are seen as a major success for Pakistani intelligence. It demonstrates the state’s efforts to tackle the root causes of terrorism in Balochistan.
Shambay’s decision to work with the state has influenced other leaders. Sarfaraz Bangalzai, head of the BNA, along with 70 colleagues, decided to join the national mainstream. This move effectively dismantled the organization.
This development marks a significant shift in Balochistan’s dynamics. The state is addressing the grievances of the local population. Initiatives like CPEC are helping to develop the province. The people of Balochistan are determined to defeat harmful elements. They aim to work towards a more prosperous future.
