In the latest Global Risks Report 2024 by the World Economic Forum, Pakistan has been identified as one of the nations deeply impacted by the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

The report underscores how misinformation has become a significant threat globally, amplifying societal polarization, undermining trust in institutions, and inciting unrest, especially in countries like Pakistan.

The report highlights the alarming link between false narratives and increased societal instability, noting that countries grappling with political and economic challenges are particularly vulnerable to the impact of these manipulated information campaigns.

This report, produced in collaboration with Zurich Insurance Group and Marsh McLennan, reflects the growing concern among over 1,400 global experts about the rise of disinformation.

For Pakistan, the consequences of this phenomenon are especially pronounced as it contributes to political instability, social divides, and challenges to national security.

The impact of misinformation is further exacerbated by the use of artificial intelligence (AI), which is predicted to increase the speed and reach of these false narratives, making them harder to control.

Pakistan’s inclusion in this list is a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to address the spread of fake news and propaganda.

As international experts agree, nations like Pakistan must enhance digital literacy, promote fact-checking, and strengthen regulations against harmful disinformation to combat these threats effectively
