Monsoon Devastation in Punjab: 135 Dead, 479 Injured, and More Rains Expected

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released a sobering fact sheet detailing the impact of this year’s monsoon rains across the province. As per official figures, 135 people have died and 479 sustained injuries, while 156 houses were damaged due to severe weather conditions.

The report, issued on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, comes as the fourth spell of monsoon rains is set to begin Sunday evening. The PDMA has urged public vigilance, especially in major urban centres.

Roof Collapses, Electrocutions Among Leading Causes of Deaths

Most fatalities occurred due to roof collapses, particularly in mud homes and old structures. The fact sheet also cites lightning strikes, electrocution incidents, and drowning in rivers as contributing factors to the high death toll.

In a statement, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed that relief efforts are underway and financial aid is being distributed to victims’ families under the direction of CM Maryam Nawaz.

Water Levels Rising, Flood Alert for Major Cities

The PDMA update includes current data on water reservoirs and river levels:

    • Mangla Dam: 49% capacity

    • Tarbela Dam: 79% capacity

    • Indus River: Experiencing low-level flooding at Tarbela, Chashma, and Taunsa

District administrations in Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala are on high alert as these urban centres face elevated flood risk during the upcoming rain spell.

The PDMA has also requested citizens to avoid bathing in rivers, stay away from power lines, and report emergencies to local rescue authorities immediately.
