In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), preparations are underway to ensure a peaceful Muharram, with approximately 40,000 security personnel set to be deployed. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, emphasizing the need for stringent security arrangements ahead of the holy month.

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds significant religious importance, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala. This period witnesses religious processions and gatherings across Pakistan, particularly honoring the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“Around 40,000 security personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order during Muharram,” reported the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). Special contingents from the Frontier Constabulary (FC) and Pakistan Army will also be mobilized to safeguard processions and gatherings in KP.

The province will host Muharram processions and gatherings across 14 districts, with eight districts classified as “most sensitive” and the remaining as “sensitive” in terms of security concerns. To bolster security, a central control room will be established at the Home Department, integrating various departments and law enforcement agencies.

“To ensure a secure environment, mobile phone services will be temporarily suspended in sensitive districts,” stated the APP. Additionally, measures to monitor social media activities and prohibit activities like pillion riding and display of arms have been enforced.

Chief Minister Gandapur emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining law and order throughout Muharram. He called upon all stakeholders, including religious leaders and elected representatives, to foster religious harmony and tolerance during this sensitive period.

The health and rescue departments of the province are also gearing up with specialized duties to handle any unforeseen circumstances effectively. Gandapur stressed the timely execution of responsibilities by all relevant authorities and agencies to ensure a peaceful observance of Muharram.

The security preparations underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding public safety and preserving peace during Muharram in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As the holy month approaches, efforts continue to enhance security measures and promote communal harmony across the province.
