PTI-backed independent Khurram Zeeshan secures KP Senate seat with 91 votes

PTI-backed independent candidate Khurram Zeeshan has been elected as a senator on the general seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The seat became vacant after the disqualification of PTI leader Shibli Faraz, who was serving as the opposition leader in the Senate before being convicted in cases related to the May 9, 2023 incidents.

A Clear Win in KP Assembly

Zeeshan emerged victorious with a decisive 91 votes out of 137 cast during the polling process at the KP Assembly. A minimum of 75 votes was required to secure the seat. His main opponent, Taj Mohammad Afridi, backed by opposition parties, managed to receive 45 votes. The election also included Irfan Saleem, another PTI-backed name, who served as a covering candidate for Zeeshan.

Despite being contested among three candidates, the primary competition was expected between Zeeshan and Afridi, both drawing support from major political blocs within the province.

    Reactions and Statements

Following his victory, Khurram Zeeshan expressed gratitude to his supporters, stating “Thank God” in a post on Facebook. Speaking to reporters outside the KP Assembly, he reiterated his commitment to “Pakistan’s haqeeqi azadi (true freedom),” echoing a popular slogan associated with PTI’s political narrative.

KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also took part in the voting process, later sharing a post on his official account voicing support for Zeeshan. Out of the 145-member provincial assembly, four Awami National Party (ANP) lawmakers abstained from participating in the polling.

    Political Implications

Zeeshan’s victory is seen as another sign of PTI-backed candidates maintaining influence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s political landscape, despite recent challenges faced by senior leaders. His success fills a crucial Senate seat, ensuring continued representation for PTI-aligned lawmakers in the upper house of Parliament.

Analysts suggest the result demonstrates the KP Assembly’s continued alignment with PTI’s political direction, reaffirming the party’s base of support in the province. The smooth polling process also reflected procedural stability and legislative cooperation among members.

    A Strengthened Position

With Zeeshan now assuming his Senate role, attention shifts to how PTI-backed members will leverage their representation to shape policy discussions and national decision-making. The win reaffirms the group’s foothold in KP politics, setting the tone for future contests and legislative initiatives.
