Amid rising tensions within the Western alliance, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for unity within NATO, warning against divisions at a time of escalating geopolitical uncertainty.
Speaking at an EU summit in Nicosia, Meloni emphasized that cohesion within the alliance remains its greatest strength. Her remarks come in response to reports suggesting that the United States is considering action against Spain after Madrid refused to support operations against Iran.
“NATO must remain united. I believe it is a source of strength,” Meloni said, underlining the importance of solidarity among member states despite policy differences.
The Italian leader also stressed the need to reinforce Europe’s role within the alliance. She highlighted the importance of strengthening NATO’s European pillar, making it clear that it should complement, not replace, American leadership.
Her comments reflect growing concern across Europe about internal fractures within NATO, particularly as member states adopt differing positions on key global conflicts. Spain’s reluctance to back US-led actions against Iran has exposed these fault lines, raising questions about the alliance’s ability to present a unified front.
Meloni’s intervention signals an attempt to contain potential discord, urging allies to prioritize collective strength over unilateral disagreements. As global tensions rise, maintaining cohesion within NATO is increasingly seen as critical to preserving its strategic relevance.
