In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the first half of 2024 has witnessed a disturbing surge in terrorism-related activities. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s district, Dera Ismail Khan, stands out with the highest number of incidents, leading the province in various forms of terrorism, extortion, target killings, and kidnappings for ransom.
According to a recent report from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), a total of 477 incidents linked to terrorism and associated crimes have been reported across 14 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this period. These include 229 cases of terrorism, 78 cases of extortion, 38 cases of target killings, and multiple instances of kidnapping for ransom.
Dera Ismail Khan, the hometown of Chief Minister Gandapur, tops the list with 107 reported incidents across all categories, followed closely by Peshawar with 87 cases and Bannu with 60 cases. The breakdown reveals Dera Ismail Khan leading with 63 terrorism cases, followed by 41 in Bannu, 33 in North Waziristan, and varying numbers in other districts.
The report highlights alarming statistics in specific districts: Peshawar recorded a significant number of extortion cases (48), while North Waziristan reported the highest count of target killings. Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan followed with 8 and 7 cases of target killings respectively. Additionally, instances of terrorism facilitation were noted, with Dera Ismail Khan and Mardan being prominent.
Financial support for terrorism also emerged as a concern, with cases reported in Mardan, Dera Ismail Khan, and Dir districts. This data underscores the pressing need for enhanced security measures and targeted interventions to tackle the growing threat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The escalating trend demands immediate attention and collaborative efforts to safeguard the region and its inhabitants from the pervasive threat of terrorism.
