In response to Iran’s military support for Russia’s war on Ukraine and armed groups in the Middle East, the EU Council has announced an expansion of restrictive measures against Iran. These measures aim to target individuals and entities involved in supplying, selling, or transferring Iran’s missiles and UAVs.
The EU Council stated that the framework, adopted in July 2023, currently prohibits the export of components used in the construction and production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from the EU to Iran. It also provides for travel restrictions and asset freeze measures against persons responsible for supporting or involved in Iran’s UAV program.
The Council emphasized the need to address Iran’s continuing military support of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its support for non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region. Following Iran’s drone and missiles attacks against Israel on April 13, 2024, the Council decided to expand its restrictive measures to cover not only UAVs but also missiles.
Initially, Iran denied supplying drones to Russia, but later acknowledged providing a small number before Moscow initiated its war on Ukraine in 2022. Iran has also intensified its efforts against American and Israeli interests, deploying armed groups throughout the Middle East that it supports, arms, and trains, particularly evident after Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.
The EU’s decision to expand restrictive measures against Iran underscores its commitment to addressing Iran’s destabilizing actions in the region and its support for Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
