The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has taken swift action following a violent outbreak during a peace rally in Bannu. At least one person was killed and many injured as gunfire triggered chaos among thousands gathered to demand heightened security in the district. Organized by local traders and political groups, the rally aimed to promote peace, symbolized by waving white flags.

Eyewitnesses reported escalating tensions when the crowd moved toward the Bannu cantonment, igniting tents guarded by security forces after a recent terrorist attack. Shots allegedly fired from nearby prompted security forces to retaliate, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Local authorities intervened promptly, convening a jirga of elders to restore calm amidst condemnation from activists and rights organizations, disputing the official casualty count. The PTI core committee strongly condemned the violence, urging a transparent inquiry and accountability for the lives lost.

In response, KP government spokesperson Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif assured that the situation is under control with heightened security in sensitive zones. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur announced the formation of a commission to investigate the incident thoroughly. “The commission will ensure an impartial inquiry, determining accountability before legal actions,” Saif emphasized.

Residents of Bannu staged a sit-in demanding justice outside the Police Line Chowk, criticizing the shutdown of communication services following the incident. Maulana Abdul Ghaffar Khan and other leaders reiterated their call for peace, rejecting armed presence in their community.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan highlighted the public’s plea for tranquility amid disruptions to communication services and roadblocks. The unrest follows a recent terrorist attack on Bannu Cantonment, further straining relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Foreign Office summoned Afghan officials, demanding action against terror groups operating across the border, emphasizing bilateral security cooperation. The incident underscores ongoing security challenges, urging collaborative efforts for regional stability.
