PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Climate Action During Gilgit Baltistan Visit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the rain- and flood-hit areas of Gilgit Baltistan on Monday, where he expressed serious concern over the increasing impacts of climate change on Pakistan.

Speaking to the media during his visit, PM Shehbaz expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and the damage caused to property and infrastructure due to the recent heavy rains. He emphasized the urgency to implement long-term climate adaptation strategies.

“Every year we are affected by climate change,” said the Prime Minister, recalling the devastating floods of 2022. He stated that the Ministry of Climate Change has been directed to develop effective plans to address the growing challenges.

During his visit, the Prime Minister reviewed the damage in multiple affected areas. He instructed local and federal authorities to coordinate closely to ensure timely relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of building climate-resilient infrastructure and better disaster preparedness. He noted that recurring floods and rain-induced disasters are no longer one-time events but part of an ongoing climate pattern.

The government aims to boost collaboration between provinces and federal agencies to create sustainable responses to these recurring disasters.

As Gilgit Baltistan recovers, the visit signals not just empathy, but a strategic pivot towards long-term environmental planning and proactive crisis management.

The message is clear: climate action can no longer be delayed.
