MOSCOW: Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has been compelled to relocate many warships from its Sevastopol naval base in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, due to consistent Ukrainian attacks, according to Russian-installed senator Dmitry Rogozin.

This marks the first official Russian confirmation of the fleet’s move from Sevastopol. Ukraine has frequently claimed its assaults on Russian warships have driven Moscow to transfer vessels to Novorossiisk.

In an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, Rogozin emphasized the need for Russia to advance its drone technology, military drone units, and electronic warfare systems to keep pace with rapid innovations on the battlefield. He stated that the fleet’s relocation highlights how large Russian ships have become vulnerable to Ukraine’s unmanned boats.

Rogozin added that despite Russia’s advances in drone technology since the 2022 war, further development and a faster focus on drone regiments and weapons spending are necessary. Enhanced satellite and surface guidance systems capable of overcoming electronic warfare are crucial for precise targeting, he said.
