Russia has reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and expressed deep concern over the rising militant threats in the region, particularly from Afghanistan. Russian Ambassador to Pakistan, Albert Khorev, highlighted Moscow’s stance in an interview with TASS. He made it clear that Russia views terrorism in Pakistan as a serious issue and stands firmly with Islamabad in its fight against extremist elements.
Khorev stressed that ensuring stability in Afghanistan is crucial for regional security. He emphasized that Moscow shares Pakistan’s worries about terrorist activity spilling over from Afghan territory. According to him, Russia remains committed to strengthening cooperation with both Islamabad and Kabul to tackle these challenges.
The ambassador described Russia-Pakistan counterterrorism collaboration as highly effective. He noted that expert-level discussions between deputy foreign ministers have been productive in addressing security concerns. These consultations, according to Khorev, play a significant role in enhancing bilateral coordination.
Highlighting the military partnership between the two nations, Khorev pointed to joint military drills. In October 2024, Russian and Pakistani forces conducted the seventh edition of the Friendship military exercises. These drills focused on countering various security threats, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to fighting terrorism.
Russia has also pledged continued support for Afghanistan’s counterterrorism measures. However, Khorev made it clear that securing the Pakistan-Afghanistan border is primarily the responsibility of both nations. He stressed that cooperation between Islamabad and Kabul is essential to counter the growing threats.
Moscow encourages both regional and bilateral initiatives to address terrorism. Khorev reaffirmed that dialogue on these security challenges continues under the Moscow consultation format and other multilateral platforms. He expressed hope that constructive engagement among Afghanistan’s neighbors would lead to stronger counterterrorism strategies.
By standing firmly with Pakistan, Russia underscores its commitment to regional stability. Moscow’s growing cooperation with Islamabad signals a strategic alignment in tackling security threats and ensuring peace in South Asia.
