Lim Guan Eng, the Bagan Member of Malaysian Parliament, has called for an explanation from Malaysia’s Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek, over the hosting of Taliban officials from Afghanistan.
Lim expressed concern that the visit raised many questions among the public. He highlighted that Afghanistan is known for its oppressive policies towards women, especially in education. “Why was the visit allowed, especially since we have no diplomatic relations with them?” Lim asked during a news conference at the Parliament building on Wednesday.
Lim, who is also the national chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a key member of the ruling unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, pressed for a clear answer on the issue.
According to reports, Fadhlina confirmed that earlier this month, the Ministry of Education had hosted a delegation from Afghanistan. The group, led by Shahabuddin Saqib, the director-general of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education, visited Malaysia for a week. During their visit, they toured several schools and educational institutions.
Lim’s inquiry comes amid growing concerns about the Taliban’s rule and its treatment of women, with many questioning Malaysia’s decision to engage with the Taliban-led government.
