Iran has made a strategic decision to fortify its border with Afghanistan in response to the escalating threat of terrorism in the region. This move comes as various extremist groups, including the TTP and the Islamic State of Khorasan, continue to operate from Afghan territory, posing a significant risk to neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran.

Since the Taliban assumed power in Afghanistan in 2021, there has been a notable surge in terrorist activities throughout the region. To address this pressing concern, Pakistan took proactive measures by erecting a substantial border fence to prevent the infiltration of terrorists from Afghanistan. Now, Iran is following suit, recognizing the urgent need to secure its own border.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, extensive efforts are underway to seal the northeastern border with Afghanistan. Four Army Border Engineering Groups have been deployed to implement this crucial initiative, focusing on key provinces such as Mazandaran, Gulistan, and Khorasan.

Brigadier General Hassan Makfi, the Ground Forces Commander, revealed that the Ministry of Interior has allocated a substantial budget of $3 billion to construct a fortified barrier comprising barbed wire, fences, and a four-meter-high concrete wall along the Iran-Afghan border.

Iranian Minister of Defense Mohammad Reza Ashtiani emphasized the grave threat posed by the Taliban’s persistent efforts to revive terrorist factions like Daesh. Recent events, such as the Kerman bombing, underscore the urgent need for enhanced border security to safeguard Iran’s sovereignty and citizens.

The decision to fortify the Afghan border has garnered international support, acknowledging Iran’s proactive stance in addressing illegal immigration, terrorism, and drug trafficking. The influx of over 8 million undocumented Afghan migrants into Iran, coupled with escalating tensions over water disputes, further underscores the need for decisive action to seal Iran-Afghan Border.

Despite concerns about potential economic ramifications, both Iran and Pakistan are steadfast in their commitment to bolstering border security. However, questions linger about the Taliban’s ability to sustain their economy in the wake of tightened border controls with neighboring countries.

As Iran takes decisive steps to secure its border with Afghanistan, the international community watches closely, hopeful that these measures will mitigate the threat of terrorism and foster stability in the region.
