WASHINGTON: The United States Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, addressed the ongoing discussions about the extradition of an Indian agent implicated in a recent assassination attempt on a Sikh separatist in the US. The matter has drawn international attention, especially amid accusations that the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has targeted Sikh separatist leaders abroad, including recent incidents in Canada.
Miller described the extradition as a “legal matter,” noting, “We have spoken to the government in this regard,” while acknowledging the complexities of the situation.
The US response to this incident has been comparatively restrained, especially when contrasted with its forceful reactions to similar actions allegedly carried out by other nations. This tempered response stands in stark contrast to the strong condemnation voiced against Russian operations in Europe.
The Indian government has conducted its own investigation into the allegations and recently shared its findings with US officials. Miller confirmed that Indian officials were briefed on the ongoing US investigation about two weeks ago and stated, “We have made it clear that we will continue to discuss the investigation.”
According to Miller, the Indian government expressed its intent for “real accountability” regarding the attack, though specifics remain under diplomatic deliberation.
