President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have formally welcomed the commencement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, marking what is increasingly being viewed as a significant diplomatic moment for Pakistan on the global stage.

The truce, which brought temporary relief to Beirut and southern Lebanon, remains fragile. Early reports from the Lebanese National News Agency indicated an initial violation when an ambulance was struck in the border town of Kounine, resulting in casualties among medical personnel. At the same time, the Lebanese Army accused Israeli forces of continued “acts of aggression,” including intermittent shelling, while Israel maintained that its deployments were a response to ongoing activities by Hezbollah.

Amid these tensions, Pakistan’s role as a mediator has drawn considerable international attention. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian publicly praised both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir for their efforts in facilitating the ceasefire. Following high-level engagements in Tehran, the Iranian leadership credited Pakistan with helping bridge critical gaps between Tehran and Washington.

President Zardari described the ceasefire as a crucial step toward de-escalation and long-term regional stability, reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent support for Lebanese sovereignty. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the agreement would serve as a foundation for sustainable peace in the region. Diplomatic sources suggest that Field Marshal Asim Munir’s intensive shuttle diplomacy played a decisive role in resolving key sticking points that had previously stalled negotiations.

In Washington, Donald Trump added to the growing sense of momentum by indicating that a broader agreement with Iran could be imminent. He revealed that Tehran had signaled willingness to suspend aspects of its nuclear program for an extended period, a move seen as a major shift from its earlier position. Trump further suggested that a breakthrough could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, potentially stabilizing global energy markets.

There are also indications that Islamabad could become the venue for a landmark agreement, with Trump hinting at a possible visit to Pakistan should negotiations reach a successful conclusion. However, the situation remains delicate. U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that American forces remain prepared to resume combat operations if diplomatic efforts fail to produce a lasting resolution.

Despite these diplomatic advances, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate. Since the escalation of tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, more than a million Lebanese citizens have reportedly been displaced. While scenes of cautious celebration were witnessed in Beirut following the ceasefire announcement, uncertainty continues to loom over its durability.

Hezbollah has issued a stern warning, stating that it remains fully prepared to respond to any perceived violations, emphasizing that its adherence to the truce is conditional on the cessation of Israeli actions. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron has called for restraint from all sides, urging Hezbollah to disarm and insisting that Israel respect Lebanon’s territorial integrity to prevent further escalation.

The unfolding developments highlight both the promise and fragility of the current ceasefire, while placing Pakistan at the center of an evolving diplomatic landscape with far-reaching regional implications.
