The Afghan Taliban have vehemently denied any involvement in the attack on Chinese workers in Pakistan. Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s chief spokesperson, reiterated their stance, asserting that Afghanistan bore no responsibility for the tragic events of March 26. He dismissed Pakistan’s probe as an attempt to sow discord between Afghanistan and China.

A delegation from Pakistan had traveled to Kabul to present the findings of their investigation into the Attack on Chinese Workers. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson revealed that they sought collaboration from Afghan authorities to apprehend the perpetrators, based on concrete evidence provided. The Afghan side pledged to cooperate and examine the investigation’s findings.

According to Pakistani officials, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) orchestrated the attack from sanctuaries in Afghanistan. These sanctuaries allegedly became available to the TTP following the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan three years ago. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of allowing foreign extremist groups to operate freely within Afghanistan, a claim disputed by the Taliban.

Despite the Taliban’s denial, a U.S. government report to Congress highlighted their continued tolerance of groups like the TTP within Afghanistan. Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov echoed concerns about Afghanistan’s instability, citing the presence of radical groups and the risk of terrorism spreading beyond its borders.

The United Nations previously reported that the Taliban maintained ties with the TTP, supplying them with weapons and equipment. Furthermore, some Taliban members allegedly joined the TTP in conducting cross-border raids into Pakistan. However, the Taliban government remains unrecognized by the international community.

China, despite the lack of formal recognition, has been actively engaging with Afghanistan since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in 2021. Beijing appointed an ambassador to Kabul and accepted a Taliban ambassador, signaling efforts to strengthen ties with the fundamentalist regime.

The situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region, with Afghanistan’s stability impacting neighboring countries’ security. As diplomatic tensions simmer, the search for accountability in the attack on Chinese workers continues amidst conflicting narratives and international scrutiny.
