    PM Shehbaz Praises Army Chief’s Role in Securing IMF Program

    PM Shehbaz Sharif Lauds Army Chief’s Role in Securing IMF Program

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the role of General Asim Munir and friendly countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China in securing the $7 billion IMF program. He also called for expanding Pakistan’s tax network, emphasizing that the “elite must also make sacrifices” to ensure the country’s progress.

    IMF Program Support and International Collaboration

    Speaking at a press conference in London after attending the UN General Assembly session, PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted how Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China played a crucial role in making the IMF deal possible. He acknowledged their support in extending debt maturities and thanked them for helping Pakistan avoid economic collapse.

    Expanding Pakistan’s Tax Network

    The prime minister stressed that Pakistan’s economic stability depends on expanding the country’s tax base. He urged the elite to make sacrifices, adding that this is a key step toward long-term stability. He expressed hope that Pakistan would not need to turn to the IMF again.

    Role of the Army Chief and Political Stability

    PM Shehbaz credited Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir for playing a pivotal role in securing the IMF program. He noted that General Munir personally visited countries like Saudi Arabia to garner their support for Pakistan’s deal. The prime minister also emphasized that economic stability is directly linked to political stability and called out the previous government for damaging relations with China and impacting the economy.

    During his visit to the UN General Assembly, PM Shehbaz conveyed the sentiments of the Pakistani people to the world. He also mentioned positive meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus, aiming to strengthen relations with other nations.

    In a brief meeting at a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden, the prime minister shared cordial moments with President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, expressing mutual goodwill.
