Pakistan Navy Seizes Drugs Worth Nearly $1 Billion in Arabian Sea Operation
In one of the largest maritime interdictions in recent history, Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) Yarmook has seized narcotics valued at nearly $1 billion from two vessels in the Arabian Sea. The operation was carried out under the Saudi-led Combined Maritime Force (CMF) as part of Operation Al Masmak.
Major Seizure During Joint Operation
According to a statement from the CMF, PNS Yarmook intercepted two dhow boats within 48 hours. On October 18, the crew boarded the first vessel and discovered over two tons of crystal methamphetamine valued at $822 million. Less than two days later, they intercepted a second dhow carrying 350 kilograms of meth and 50 kilograms of cocaine worth an additional $150 million.
The vessels were identified as having no nationality. The confiscated narcotics were tested and later destroyed under CMF supervision.
International Collaboration and Strategic Success
Royal Saudi Naval Forces Commodore Fahad Aljoiad, who commands the CMF task force, called the operation one of the most successful narcotics seizures in CMF history. He emphasized that the mission highlighted the importance of multinational collaboration in ensuring maritime stability.
The CMF includes 47 countries and patrols over three million square miles of sea, including some of the world’s busiest trade routes. The Pakistan Navy’s participation reflects its strong role in combating illicit trafficking and maintaining peace across the Indian Ocean region.
Pakistan Navy’s Role and Recognition
In its official statement, Pakistan Navy said the operation underscored its “unwavering commitment to regional maritime safety and global peace.” Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf commended the crew of PNS Yarmook for their professionalism and dedication.
He added that Pakistan Navy remains committed to safeguarding national maritime interests while working with allies for collective safety. Admiral Ashraf also noted that the collaboration under the Saudi-led task force would enhance interoperability between the two navies and deepen defence ties.
National and Global Appreciation
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the Navy for its professionalism and excellence, calling the operation a matter of “national pride.” The US Central Command also congratulated the CMF for the mission’s success, recognizing the multinational effort that disrupted large-scale illicit trafficking.
The PNS Yarmook, commissioned in 2020, has previously participated in humanitarian rescues and security missions across the Indian Ocean. With its advanced surveillance and defence systems, the ship continues to serve as a key asset in Pakistan’s maritime strategy.
The near $1 billion drug seizure marks a historic achievement for the Pakistan Navy and the CMF. Beyond its operational success, the mission reinforces Pakistan’s position as a responsible maritime power committed to regional peace, global stability, and international cooperation.
