On May 29, Pakistan reaffirmed its strong commitment to global peace on the International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers and honoured the courage and sacrifices of peacekeepers, including its own serving around the world.

In a message released by the Office of the Spokesperson, Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar paid reverence to the selfless service of UN peacekeepers deployed across the world. Dar emphasized the pivotal role they continue to play in conflict zones to maintain international peace and security.

The Deputy Prime Minister/ Foreign Minister noted, “Pakistan joins the international community in recognizing the dedication, courage, and service of the UN peacekeepers, who continue to serve with distinction in many parts of the world.” He further honoured the 181 Pakistani peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, calling them symbols of the country’s enduring commitment to global peace.

Over the decades, Pakistan has consistently been one of the top Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to UN peacekeeping missions. More than 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers—both men and women—have served in various conflict zones and earned the respect of host communities and the international community identical to their professionalism, discipline, and compassion.

The message also highlighted Pakistan’s role as the host of one of the UN’s oldest peacekeeping missions—the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Stressing the relevance of UNMOGIP in the current regional context, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister underlined the need to further strengthen its presence and role. He reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding stance on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, advocating for a just resolution in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister also underscored the need for adapting UN peacekeeping to evolving global challenges. “At a time when the world is facing multifaceted threats,” he stated, “UN Peacekeeping remains one of the most reliable and cost-effective instruments for maintaining international peace and security.”

He called for renewed political commitment to modernize peacekeeping operations, including through the use of innovative technologies and stronger regional partnerships.

A testament to this commitment was Pakistan’s recent co-hosting of the Third United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting, held in Islamabad on April 15–16, 2025, in collaboration with the Republic of Korea. Themed “Towards a Safer and More Effective Peacekeeping: Use of Technology and Integrated Approach,” the meeting contributed significantly to shaping future-oriented strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions.

The Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister concluded with a reaffirmation of Pakistan’s dedication to the UN Charter and global peace efforts: “Pakistan has been and will continue to uphold its strong commitment towards UN Peacekeeping as a vital tool for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.”

As the international community reflects on the sacrifices and successes of peacekeepers, Pakistan’s legacy and ongoing contributions stand as a testament to its role as a responsible and active member of the global peace architecture.
