Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with the Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) to discuss key issues concerning workers’ welfare and Pakistan’s response to climate change.
During the meeting, the prime minister praised the ITUC’s global advocacy for labor rights and reiterated Pakistan’s strong collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to uphold and expand workers’ protections. He shared that his government has taken steps to widen the scope of the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) and the Workers’ Welfare Fund, aiming to extend benefits to a larger segment of the labor force across the country.
The prime minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to empower the younger generation through various skill development and technical training initiatives, designed to increase employment opportunities and workforce readiness.
On the issue of climate change, he pointed out that Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable nations globally, having incurred an estimated $30 billion in damages during the devastating 2022 floods. He emphasized the urgent need for sustained international financial assistance to combat the adverse effects of climate change and strengthen resilience.
The ITUC official acknowledged the progress Pakistan has made in promoting labor welfare and protecting workers’ rights.
