In Peshawar, security officials revealed that daily oil smuggling from Iran into Pakistan has significantly decreased, from 16 million liters to 5-6 million, following crackdowns on smugglers. Addressing concerns from civil society, educators, and students, officials disclosed that smugglers purchase oil at Rs15 per liter, selling it domestically at Rs280, yielding staggering profits of Rs500 million daily.

“A propaganda campaign against our security forces followed our crackdown,” stated a security official, dismissing international criticism. Emphasizing the escalating violence and terrorism, officials detailed how various mafias collaborate, using false narratives to undermine Pakistan’s stability. “These mafias, dealing in billions, spare no effort to protect their interests,” explained a senior official.

The briefing highlighted 23 terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, with 17 targeting Pakistan’s interests. Pakistan’s security forces, including military, paramilitary, and police, have bravely countered terrorism for over two decades, despite losing 90,000 lives and enduring $120 billion in economic losses.

Challenges persist, with officials urging accountability beyond military efforts. “Institutions with substantial budgets must be scrutinized,” emphasized officials, recalling the National Action Plan (NAP) post the 2014 APS terror attack. Despite reducing NAP from 21 to 14 points, progress remains elusive on all fronts.

Concerns over unregistered madaris and their curricula were also raised, amid a surge in terrorist incidents. Since January 2024, 1,063 terrorist acts claimed 111 law enforcers’ lives, prompting 22,714 military operations. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, severely affected, struggles despite substantial federal and provincial funding for security.

“Billions meant for socio-economic development in newly merged districts remain unaccounted for,” officials lamented, citing ongoing smuggling as a significant national challenge.

Pakistan continues its vigilance against threats, demonstrating resilience amidst multifaceted security challenges.
