Ishaq Dar has warned that any attempt to weaponise water will be treated as an act of aggression against Pakistan, stating that the country reserves the right to defend its national interests under international law.
Speaking on regional and global developments, the deputy prime minister said recent tensions in South Asia and beyond have underscored the importance of coordinated diplomatic engagement to preserve stability.
Dar also referred to past regional hostilities, saying that India’s military response following the 2019 Pulwama incident was unlawful. He further pointed to ongoing concerns regarding threats linked to the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that any aggression in this domain would be met with a firm response.
He highlighted Pakistan’s position during the 2025 regional escalation, referencing what he described as a proportionate and precise military response targeting Indian installations under “Operation Marka-e-Haq,” which he said demonstrated Pakistan’s defensive preparedness.
Dar stressed that sustainable regional peace depends on dialogue and cooperation, adding that instability undermines economic development across South Asia.
He also acknowledged international diplomatic support during recent US–Iran engagements, thanking countries that assisted in facilitating peace efforts and calling their involvement an important contribution to regional stability.
On broader foreign policy, the deputy prime minister said Pakistan remains committed to its role as a responsible member of the United Nations, supporting global peace initiatives while prioritizing economic stability. He noted that unresolved disputes, particularly the Kashmir issue, continue to hinder lasting peace in the region.
Dar highlighted Pakistan’s engagement within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, its economic partnership with China under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor, and its continued diplomatic relations with the European Union.
On Middle Eastern affairs, he reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position in support of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) as its capital.
He also said Pakistan played a constructive diplomatic role in facilitating early discussions between the United States and Iran, helping bring both sides to the negotiating table after years of strained relations.
