Donald Trump has stated that he would only support an agreement with Iran if it clearly benefits the United States, emphasizing that negotiations remain a central part of his leadership approach amid continuing regional tensions and diplomatic efforts.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News, Trump said negotiations are fundamentally “his job,” adding that he remains actively engaged in talks despite ongoing disagreements between Washington and Tehran. He acknowledged that Iranian negotiators are highly skilled in diplomacy and indicated that discussions have continued even in the face of major political and strategic differences.
Trump claimed that the United States currently holds a dominant position in the negotiations, asserting that Washington “has all the cards” following what he described as a major military setback for Iran. He further alleged that Iran’s naval and air capabilities had been severely damaged or destroyed, while suggesting that parts of its ground forces remained operational in a comparatively limited capacity.
The US president also warned against allowing conflicts to escalate into prolonged destructive wars, arguing that total devastation can cripple a country for decades. He stated that when a nation’s infrastructure and institutions are completely destroyed, rebuilding can take generations, stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary destruction even during periods of confrontation.
Trump reiterated that any future agreement with Iran would move forward only if it delivers clear strategic and political advantages for the United States. His remarks come amid continuing tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security disputes, and ongoing international diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing wider instability in the Middle East.
