Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts and attempts to maintain a ceasefire, the United States carried out airstrikes in southern Iran, targeting facilities allegedly linked to drone-launching operations. The strikes marked a significant escalation at a time when regional tensions remain extremely sensitive and negotiations are still underway.
According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), Iranian vessels believed to be involved in laying naval mines were also targeted during the operation. CENTCOM stated that the action was taken as a defensive measure aimed at protecting American military personnel and naval assets operating in the region.
A report by CNN quoted Central Command spokesperson Timothy Hawkins as saying that the operation was considered necessary due to growing concerns over Iranian military activity near American forces. He emphasized that while the United States continues to show restraint during the ceasefire period, it will take all necessary measures to defend its troops and military infrastructure.
Earlier, multiple explosions were heard in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, raising fears of a broader confrontation. Iranian media later reported that the situation in Bandar Abbas was under control and stated that there was no cause for public concern.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump commented on the possibility of a future agreement with Iran, saying that any deal reached with Tehran would either be “very good and meaningful” or there would be no deal at all.
