Pakistan has reaffirmed its firm opposition to the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances, describing the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as a vital pillar of the international disarmament and non-proliferation framework.
Speaking during a United Nations Security Council briefing on the Middle East, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN stressed that the prohibition of chemical weapons remains essential for maintaining global peace and security. He underscored Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to international efforts aimed at preventing the spread and use of weapons of mass destruction.
Pakistan expressed strong support for the universal adoption of the Chemical Weapons Convention and called for its full, effective, and non-discriminatory implementation worldwide. The country emphasized that equal application of international obligations is necessary to strengthen confidence in the global disarmament regime and ensure long-term stability.
Highlighting recent regional developments, Pakistan welcomed the willingness of Syrian authorities to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Pakistani representative noted that continued engagement with the international watchdog and transparent verification processes are critical for addressing outstanding concerns and advancing accountability.
Pakistan reiterated that international cooperation, adherence to established conventions, and a rules-based approach remain essential for preventing the use of chemical weapons and promoting collective security.
